Chief Executive Officer

Citizens for Global Solutions (CGS), a membership-based advocacy organization based in Washington, DC, seeks to recruit a Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The CEO will be charged with consolidating the organization's successes and leading it into the future.

Overview of CGS

Citizens for Global Solutions was formed in 2003 from the strategic merger of two nonprofit advocacy organizations-the World Federalist Association and the Campaign for UN Reform. Both organizations had long, proud traditions of activism in seeking to build peace, justice and freedom in a democratically governed world. In keeping with those values, CGS envisions a future in which nations work together to abolish war, protect our rights and freedoms, and solve global problems in our increasingly connected and interdependent world.

Finding global solutions to global problems requires effective democratic global institutions that apply the rule of law while respecting the diversity and autonomy of national and local communities. CGS takes a comprehensive view of global challenges and highlights the role of global institutions to address these challenges. It also actively promotes the ideals of democracy, law and basic human rights as the foundation for addressing current challenges. CGS' staff and members educate Americans about global interdependence and promote our vision, ideas and specific proposals to political leaders.

In today's world of terrorism, wars, genocide, environmental degradation, disease and economic globalization, global solutions are an idea whose time has come. By engaging Americans and shaping the political debate in the United States, CGS makes a substantial difference by promoting the ideals of democracy, law, and basic human rights as the foundation of how to protect the world for future generations.

Programs

Citizens for Global Solutions program priorities include:

  • U.S. Global Engagement: Promoting a multilateral foreign policy. We advocate for a foreign policy that makes us stronger and safer through teamwork, cooperation, and effective global institutions. Through our Global to Local program, we educate communities across America about global challenges and catalyze grassroots activity around global issues.
  • Peace and Security: Advocating collaborative approaches to prevent and resolve conflicts and establish effective peace operations. We promote an empowered, efficient and accountable UN peacekeeping capacity to meet the challenges posed to the world by post-conflict regions.
  • International Law and Justice: Strengthening laws and institutions that protect human rights and help nations resolve disputes peacefully. We promote U.S. cooperation with the International Criminal Court to prevent atrocities.
  • Health and Environment: Supporting global cooperative efforts to confront environmental and public health challenges. We want to see the U.S. resume its leadership role in protecting the global environment. We promote the establishment of an international system to help countries work together to protect the environment and manage shared natural resources.

Within these four programmatic areas, Citizens for Global Solutions focuses on selected issues in which we have developed specialized staff expertise, and devotes considerable resources to achieving short- to medium-term policy goals.

Structure and Governance

Citizens for Global Solutions is comprised of both a 501(c)(4) advocacy organization-Citizens for Global Solutions, and a 501(c)(3)-Citizens for Global Solutions Education Fund-that focuses on research, policy and program development. The 501(c) 4 also has an affiliated Political Action Committee that endorses and raises funds for candidates in federal elections.

The Boards of both organizations govern the organization, and there is some overlap in membership. The CEO will be an ex officio member of both Boards.

In addition to these governance bodies, any group of members can form a chapter if they meet established minimum requirements for membership and action. Each year, Chapter Chairs meet during the Annual Meeting to elect a 10-person Grassroots Leadership Council that provides ongoing support and input to the organization's advocacy program.

Citizens for Global Solutions has a professional staff of approximately 10 people, 7,500 members and supporters nationwide, and an annual budget of $1.3 million. The organization owns two adjoining buildings located in Washington, D.C.

CGS's Chief Executive Officer

The CEO of CGS will be based in the Washington, DC headquarters and report to the Chairs of the two Boards of Directors. He/she will have primary responsibility for the fundraising, policy, program development and strategic direction of Citizens for Global Solutions, and will work with CGS' Board to set and implement organizational priorities.

Specifically the position involves the following tasks:

Organizational focus and objectives
  • One of the CEO's first tasks will be to consolidate CGS' programs and focus its work to have a measurable impact in selected areas. Within six months of being hired, the CEO will be expected to review CGS' existing strategy and present a program plan that sets organizational goals and allocates resources accordingly. This plan will also identify key organizational needs and challenges (including fund-raising, human resources, technology, etc.) and propose steps to address them.
Internal management
  • CGS has a very enthusiastic and capable staff. The CEO must be a leader who is capable of directing, motivating and developing the staff. He/she will also be expected to hire (or promote internally) a Deputy (or Chief Operating Officer) who will assist with managing the day-to-day operations of the organization. This hire will be made with input and advice from the CGS Boards.
  • The CEO will be expected to provide financial oversight and ensure that the organization is on firm ground financially. In this, he/she will be assisted by the Deputy/COO.
External representation
  • Beyond providing internal leadership, the CEO must also compellingly represent the organization externally, reaching public policy and private sector leaders, philanthropic stakeholders and the public at-large. He/she will be expected to expand the reach and public recognition of CGS as a leader in efforts to reform and strengthen international institutions and the rule of law in addressing selected global issues.
  • He/she will also network with international action and advocacy agencies to create momentum toward strategic programs.
Fund-Raising and Development
  • The CEO will provide leadership for a comprehensive fundraising program, with appropriate emphases on membership, major gift, foundation, corporate, in-kind support and other revenue generating activities. We expect that at least 25-30 percent of his/her time will be spent on business development and donor cultivation.
  • The Board anticipates organizational growth of about 10% per year in the near term and expects the CEO to deliver a business development strategy that meets that objective. In addition, the CEO will assess the organization's readiness to conduct a capital campaign in the near future.
Board & Member Relations
  • CGS is a membership organization. Cultivating and expanding its membership base is critical for moving the organization forward. Although the CEO will not directly be responsible for member relations, he/she will be required to develop a strategy to engage and expand CGS' membership base and oversee its implementation.
  • The CEO will also support the development of a vibrant future by continuing to cultivate, expand and make best use of the Board of Directors of both Citizens for Global Solutions and the CGS Education Fund. He/she will manage relationships with the Board as a whole and with individual members to use their skills, ideas, contacts and other resources to help achieve CGS's objectives.

To accomplish these objectives, the CEO should ideally possess the following types of professional qualifications and attributes:

  • A commitment to the principles of building peace, justice and freedom in a democratically governed world.
  • Substantial experience in a leadership or senior management position.
  • A demonstrated record of success working with members of Congress, the Administration, international organizations, foundations, and national and international media.
