Keynotes

Eric Schwartz- Executive Director, the Connect U.S. Fund

Prior to joining the Connect U.S. Fund in a full-time capacity in 2007, Eric Schwartz served as the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Deputy Special Envoy for Tsunami Recovery. In that role, he worked with the Special Envoy, former President Clinton, to promote coordination, accountability to donors and beneficiaries, and best practices in the recovery effort. Before this appointment, Mr. Schwartz served as a lead expert for the congressionally mandated Mitchell-Gingrich Task Force on United Nations Reform. Prior to that, in 2003 and 2004, he served as the second-ranking official at the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. From 1993 to 2001, Mr. Schwartz served at the National Security Council, ultimately as Senior Director and Special Assistant to the President for Multilateral and Humanitarian Affairs. He managed administration responses on a range of peacekeeping, humanitarian and refugee issues, including U.S. support for and involvement in the INTERFET deployment in East Timor (1999), the U.S. train and equip program for West African troops in Sierra Leone (1999), the rescue of Kurdish refugees from Northern Iraq (1996), the resettlement of Vietnamese boat people (mid-1990s), safe haven for Haitian refugees (1994), and U.S. relief efforts in Central America and Kosovo (1999). He also had responsibilities for rule of law and human rights issues, and initiated and managed the White House review that resulted in U.S. signature of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Mr. Schwartz currently serves as a visiting faculty member at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University.

Gillian Sorensen- Senior Adviser/National Advocate, The U.N. Foundation

Gillian Sorensen, now Senior Advisor/National Advocate at the United Nations Foundation, has had a long career working with and for the UN. From 1997-2003, she served as Assistant Secretary-General for External Relations on appointment by Secretary-General Kofi Annan. She was responsible for outreach to civil society, including NGOs committed to peace, justice, development and human rights. From 1993-1996, she served as Special Adviser for Public Policy on appointment by Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, where she led the global commemoration of the UN's Fiftieth Anniversary and the coordination of the UN50 Summit at Headquarters in New York with 180 Heads of Government participating. Mrs. Sorensen is a graduate of Smith College and studied at the Sorbonne. She has been a Fellow at the Kennedy School of Government (Institute of Politics) at Harvard University. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Women's Foreign Policy Group.

Briggs Bomba- Director of Campaigns, Africa Action

 Briggs Bomba joined the staff of Africa Action in the fall of 2007. He holds a Master's Degree in Social and Applied Economics from Wright State University. Briggs has extensive experience working with civil society organizations in Zimbabwe and other African countries, having served on the Management Committees of the Zimbabwe Social Forum and the Southern Africa Social Forum until 2006. He has traveled extensively on the African continent and internationally, including to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Rwanda, Kenya, Lesotho, and the United Kingdom among other places in Africa and Europe. Briggs's past positions include Student Representative Council President in Zimbabwe, President of the African Students Union at Wright State University in Dayton Ohio, Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Social Forum Youth Council, and National Coordinator of Students Against Privatization in Zimbabwe. Prior to joining Africa Action, Briggs was the point person for the American Friends Service Committee's "Life over Debt" campaign in Dayton, Ohio, advocating total debt cancellation for Africa. Before that, Briggs spent a year at the Center for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation in Johannesburg, South Africa.

9 am - 3 pm: Travel to Capitol Hill and undergo Lobby Training at the Lutheran Church of Reformation (212 E. Capitol St) and then spend the day on the Hill meeting with your local representatives about the issues that matter to you the most.

Lunch Speakers (at Lutheran Church): Senator Jeff Merkley (OR), Congressman Tom Perriello (VA) and Congressman Joe Sestak (PA).

Within Reagan International Airport, follow signs for the Metro and take the Yellow Line toward Fort Totten. Transfer at Gallery Place to the Red Line toward Glenmont. Deboard at the New York Ave/Florida Ave/Gallaudet U stop.
