Election Day is November 7th, less than a month away. One-third of Senate seats
and all House seats are being contested. Global Solutions PAC has endorsed over
170 candidates and is supporting almost 50 campaigns. Global Solutions PAC works
to elect candidates who share Citizens for Global Solutions values and champion
its policy goals on the Hill. The candidates described below are challengers in
some very competitive races in both chambers of Congress.
In the Senate, Global Solutions PAC proudly supports Jon Tester (MT), Claire
McCaskill (MO) and Sherrod Brown (OH), as well as several other globally minded
candidates. Jon Tester is challenging Senator Conrad Burns for this seat. Mr.
Tester has an excellent chance in this toss-up race. He has been outspoken on
health, climate, and energy issues and sees the importance of the U.S returning
to its leadership role in world affairs. Claire McCaskill believes strongly in
addressing climate change and promoting alternate energy sources. Ms. McCaskill
backs a cooperative U.S. foreign policy and plans to work on global health
issues. Sherrod Brown, currently a Congressman from Ohio’s 13th district, has
been strong on all of our policy issues and Citizens for Global Solutions looks
forward to working with him as the new Senator from Ohio.
In the House, the PAC stands firmly behind many candidates, including Gabrielle
Giffords (AZ-08), Bruce Braley (IA-01), Joe Donnelley (IN-02), John Sarbanes
(MD-03), Keith Ellison (MN-05) and Lois Murphy (PA-06). Former state Senator
Gabrielle Giffords won the Democratic primary to fill the seat of retiring Rep.
Jim Kolbe. Ms. Giffords supports the promotion of international diplomatic
efforts to address the serious security issues of weapons proliferation,
terrorism, and human rights abuses and also the development of global alliances
to address the critical problems of climate change and diseases.
Bruce Braley supports the development of a responsible strategy with regards to
current foreign policy challenges. He will work to secure more funding for
disease prevention and research as well as more preventative education in
developing nations. Joe Donnelly plans to address climate change, one of the
world's most pressing issues. John Sarbanes, an attorney and social justice
advocate, is running to fill the open seat of Ben Cardin, who is running for an
open Senate seat. Mr. Sarbanes is an outspoken advocate on international
justice, climate change, and a cooperative foreign policy.
Keith Ellison won his primary to fill the seat of retiring Rep. Marty Sabo, in
the Twin Cities area. In this predominantly Democratic district, he is all but
assured of becoming the first Muslim American to serve in the U.S. House of
Representatives. He will work to ensure full funding of the United Nations and
other international organizations that advocate smart, sound policies that can
quickly respond and address epidemics. Lois Murphy, in the Philadelphia suburbs,
strongly supports partnering with other countries, the UN, and multilateral
coalitions to address the global problem of terrorism. These partnerships are
integral to improving our nation's international stature and restoring the U.S.
to a leadership role on the problems facing the world in the 21st Century.
