Citizens for Global Solutions is proud to announce the release of Faithful Against Torture, a collection of essays by people of faith considering torture in the light of the principles, precepts and traditions of their religions.

The essays in this collection remind us that all of our major religions and religious leaders have wisdom and insight to offer on the use of torture by our government.

America still grapples with accountability for the torture committed in our name. Incidents such as Guantanamo harm our image in the international community. The establishment of universal standards to prohibit torture would help secure America’s place in the world. The authors in the book address the issue of torture with the perspective and gravity that it deserves. Citizens for Global Solutions hopes that the timeless answer in this book will guide us as we establish rules to govern ourselves in the future.

Book Club Engages Activists

Citizens for Global Solutions recently launched its first online book club. Closely linked with our organization’s End Torture Campaign, this new outreach initiative allowed some of our most engaged activists to participate in a discussion about U.S. interrogation policy and torture as practiced under the Bush administration.

Leadership Change at the Organization

After three years as the President and CEO of Citizens for Global Solutions, Charles J. Brown informed the organization’s board of directors that he was resigning, effective at the end of September 2007.

Upon accepting Brown’s resignation, the board appointed Raj Purohit, who has served as Senior Fellow for the past two years, as the organization’s Interim Director. The board also announced that they are working together to set out the criteria for the selection of a permanent leader for the organization.

INTERVIEW: Leon Panetta, Joint Ocean Commission Initiative

A former Member of the House of Representatives, Director of the Office of Management and Budget and Chief of Staff to President Bill Clinton, Leon Panetta has recently turned his attention to one of his great passions: management of the world’s vast oceans. Panetta now Co-Chairs the Joint Ocean Commission Initiative (JOCI), a key partner of Citizens for Global Solutions in the push to ratify the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea (LOS). Panetta recently agreed to be interviewed for Global Solutions Quarterly.

60 Years of Global Solutions

While Citizens for Global Solutions was formally created three years ago, its legacy dates back to 1947. Sixty years ago, in the wake of World War II, 327 delegates representing 30 chapters and organizations from across the nation met in Asheville, North Carolina and founded the United World Federalists (UWF).
