WFI at the 2006 CGS Conference
Washington, DC
The WFI presented a forum discussion with the theme " Looking Ahead: Is a Long-Term, Visionary U.S. Foreign Policy Possible?" Gillian Sorenson, of the United Nations Foundation, was the guest speaker.
After an introduction to WFI and Gillian Sorensen by Scott Hoffman, Ms. Sorensen gave a short keynote talk presenting her vision of changes in U.N. structure that might be possible in the future, and what changes in U.S. foreign policy would be necessary to make them happen.
This was followed by high-energy, small-group discussions at four large tables. WFI Fellow Mariel Leonard, Steering Committee Chair Ron Glossop, intern Kelly Nelson, and Scott Hoffman led the four groups. Steering Committee member Lucy Webster moderated the reporting session that followed, allowing each group to report its answers to the title questions.
Ron Glossop closed the session, noting that WFI is showing its usefulness to CGS by creating a forum where questions about the future of our planet can be discussed and tentative consensus reached. He also urged participants to look for opportunities to promote CGS's long-term objectives through supporting structures such as the International Criminal Court and Responsibility to Protect.
